Leaving Cert French Vocab- Road Accidents

Road accidents can appear in a variety of forms on a question. For example, you may be asked to identify the causes of road accidents, or identify possible solutions to reducing road accidents. The vocabulary here is designed to be varied enough to deal with a variety of situations.

Ralentir: To slow down

Conduire: To drive

Se consacrer (sur): To concentrate (on)

Tuer : To kill

Augmenter : To increase

Réduire: To reduce

Utiliser: To use

Distraire: To distract

Éviter: To avoid

Ignorer: To ignore

Respecter: To respect

Rester: To stay

Vérifier: To check

Limiter: To limit

Sensibiliser: To make people aware of

Faire une pause: To have a break

Dormir: to sleep

Perdre: To lose

Faire un excès de vitesse: To speed

Provoquer : To provoke

Boire : To drink

Remember : the vocabulary here is intentionally vague enough to be used in a variety of situations.

Let’s take “perdre.”

On peut perdre la vie si on utilise le portable au volant. One can lose their life if they use the phone at the wheel.

Il y a un tas de gens qui ignorent les conséquences de la conduite en état d’ivresse- par exemple on peut perdre leur permis de conduire. There are many people who ignore the consequences of drink driving- for example one can lose their driving license.
